General
This will be a very individualized class. We will have students that are brand new to piano, and students who have had some experience. The reason we have so many assessments is so that I can track each student’s progress and individualize his or her content. I will do the best I can to keep track of each student, but please let me know what I can do to challenge you or help you.
GOAL I: The student will demonstrate the ability to perceive, perform, and respond to music.
The student will describe the characteristics of musical sound.

The student will make connections between music from the oral and written traditions of various cultures.
The student will describe the roles of music in reflecting and influencing diverse social structures.
The student will recognize influences and interactions among music, dance, theatre, the visual arts, and other disciplines.
The student will demonstrate knowledge of a wide variety of representative music styles and genres.

Materials
NEVER USE PEN IN MY CLASS.
Students must provide their own one-inch three ring binder with 3 dividers and a plain old boring #2 pencil, to be KEPT IN YOUR BINDER. NO PEN ALLOWED! All other materials will be provided. Students have the OPTION to purchase their textbooks, new, for $8-15 each. See order form. Students may not take school-owned copies home. Work done in anything but a plain old boring #2 pencil will not be accepted.
Grading Policy
Class Participation (100 points per quarter) student participates positively and is prepared at all times
Assessments (formal and informal)
Playing Assessments (10-25 points each) weekly playing, repertoire pieces, sight reading, etc.
Written Assessments (5-50 points each) weekly quizzes, repertoire reflections, unit tests, etc.
Make-up work
Students will have two days after returning from school from an EXCUSED absence to complete missed work at no penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to find out what work was missed, schedule a time to make it up with Ms. Freel, and complete it. Students will not be able to makeup missed work from unexcused absences.
Late Work Policy
Late work will be marked down 10% of the total points for each day it is late, up to 2 days. A student may turn in late work any time before the end of the marking period to receive no greater than 50%.
Hammond HS Honor Code
"All students are expected to abide by the Hammond Honor Code at all times and will be held accountable for any violations of the Honor Code."
Electronics Policy
“The use of personal communication devices and other electronics will not be permitted during class time unless teacher permission is given. Students must follow all relevant HCPSS Policies, including but not limited to Responsible Use of Technology and Social Media (Policy 8080) and Technology Security (3040) policies. The student takes all responsibility for the device’s safety, security, and maintenance. Staff members will confiscate these items if the above expectations are not followed, and the items will only be returned to a parent/guardian in the front office."
I STRICTLY enforce the technology policy. You have a computer in front of you the whole class and should never need to use your personal electronic devices. Therefore, if they (or any part of them) are seen or heard from bell to bell (not right after the bell or right before the bell), they will be confiscated.
If a student is found using the computer for non-piano curriculum related purposes at any time without permission, privileges of use will be lost, and could result in removal from the class, potentially at the loss of credit of the student.
Attendance Policy
"The HCPSS Attendance policy (9010) states that students may be denied credit for a course if they exceed 5% absences (9 days in a full-year course) in the course. An absence is only excused if a legal excuse note is supplied within two school days."
